Protect your skin this summer

Protect your skin this summer - Sensibly, we keep our bodies covered and protect them from the climates, but our faces are constantly exposed. The face is left to battle it out with the sun, wind and rain, which is why the skin on the face ages so much quicker than the covered skin on our bodies.

Traditionally, women in desert areas covered their faces, and their skin remained youthful. Is it any wonder that our faces are the first part of our bodies to show age? Faces that are left unprotected in the heat of the day quickly show age. Drinking alcohol, smoking and eating junk food also show in our faces in time. There are also general stresses and emotions that leave their marks on our face.

It is said that you may begin life with the face you were born with, but by the time you reach your early 40s, you have the face you have earned. Happiness contributes greatly to beauty and makes your complexion glow, whilst unhappiness will ultimately show in the expression lines of the face. Happiness is often found in enjoying the small pleasures of life and in being kind to others.

Protect Your Skin from Sun Damage

By now, most people have finally got the message that whilst we love it, too sun is not good for the skin. For my generation, coming from the UK, sunshine was a luxury to be enjoyed as much as possible. However, thankfully, the younger generation is well educated on sun protection. The best way to protect the skin is to stay in the shade, especially between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun is at its most harmful. If you must go out in the midday sun, cover yourself with a hat, veil or umbrella.

Apply sunscreen properly

When you apply your sunscreen, you should apply it on clean skin for the best protection and not over moisturizer or foundation. Apply sunscreen on your skin and let it soak in — this is the way to have the best protection. If you like to wear foundation in the summer, choose a tinted moisturizer with sun protection and protect your face at all times when you are out in the hot sun.

Vitamin D

Recent studies have shown that many people are deficient in vitamin D. However, you don’t need to stay in the sun for a long time to build up vitamin D stores in the body. Just a mere 10 minutes of exposing your hands, arms and face in the early morning or late afternoon will give you all the vitamin D you need. However, those at risk, with sun sensitive conditions or with a history of skin cancer should check with their dermatologist first. Even better, you don’t specifically need the sun’s hot rays; spending time outside on a cloudy day will also give you enough vitamin D.

Massage

If you live in a hot climate, you need to take extra special care of your skin. Massage is the secret to good skin. Think of protecting your skin during the day and feeding it at night. For a diagram on how to massage your skin, e-mail me at skinmassagean@ardenhealth.com.

Water your skin inside and out

Drink lots of water every day. Experts recommend that you drink at least eight glasses of water a day; this really does improve the skin's condition. Always have a glass of water as your first drink of the day.

Keep Smiling

On average, children smile 400 times a day, while adults only manage 15. Smiling tightens the supporting connective tissue around your mouth, which helps to maintain the shape of your face. It also sends feel-good signals to your brain. Because we use our facial muscles less as we age, our faces can droop downwards. So, to prevent this from happening, go to Arden healthcare website to download your free copy of my mini morning facial exercises. They will keep your face high up on its mooring and will tone up sagging jaw lines, which is important for the over 30s. ( naturalhealthlines.com )
