Diagnose your body type The term ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit words: ayus, meaning life, and vid, meaning knowledge. To make the most of ayurveda, you should be aware of your body type or constitution. The three main constitutions are vata, pitta and kapha, and they determine the characteristics of your body. Are you air? Vata is the constitution for the air element. When balanced, vatas are vibrant and enthusiastic, but when out of balance they can become restless, anxious and underweight. Swimming is their perfect exercise and they should drink lots of ginger or nutmeg tea

Are you fire? Pitta is the constitution for fire and water. When in balance, pittas are articulate and courageous, but when unbalanced are irritable, demanding and typically suffer from skin problems. Try yoga poses that stretch the back muscles and improve digestion, and avoid hot and spicy foods

Or are you earth? Kapha is the constitution for water and earth. When balanced, kaphas are affectionate and forgiving; when unbalanced, lethargic and possessive. They should incorporate high-impact exercise into their week, and follow a light diet of freshly cooked food

Meditation's what you need Anyone can benefit from ayurveda. Small changes to your diet make a difference, and incorporating 10 minutes of meditation a day can completely re-energise you. It teaches you techniques to control your mind so you are more in control of your decision-making process, and see things with more clarity

Stretch yourself If you go to the gym a lot and work out with weights, try introducing more holistic exercises into your life, like yoga – which can still be quite physical. Make sure you're always aware of your breathing. Few of us actually take care of our breathing, but when you inhale less air, toxins in your body build up

A change for the better I believe if everyone did ayurveda, pharmacists would close. It can have a huge impact, but it all depends on your level of discipline.
