Father and son enjoy a day out

IN an age where the internet, hundreds of TV channels and video games make up most of a young boy's social life, there's even more need to spend as much time outdoors and share experiences with your son

The importance of father/son bonding has recently become the focus of social experts in the UK, with an emphasis on child nurturing and interaction.

So with February Half Term fast approaching, this is a great time to counter balance technology and ensure your little terror is getting fresh air, exercise and most importantly some quality time with his dad.

Here are ten top days out you can spend with your son.

Dad's the way to do it ... Father and son enjoy a day out

The Zoo and Longleat

London Zoo, Edinburgh Zoo, Bristol Zoo: the list is endless.

British zoos have transformed over the past decade, with an emphasis on ecology rather than the big cats.

Boys always find the reptiles fascinating, but if your son is after lions and elephants then Longleat, located on Lord Bath's estate in Somerset, is a brilliant alternative.

Opening once again in February, the official website offers cheap ticket alternatives with discounts and vouchers.

Fishing

An old school favourite, fishing is one of the best bonding activities out there.

One of the UK's finest trout fisheries can be found at Draycote Waters, Warwickshire, which is regularly stocked with both rainbow and brown trout from the start of the season (March) right through to the close in October.

Don't discount this sport if you have never learnt before - lessons are widely available and relatively inexpensive.

Bike rides

From unspoiled coastlines and nature reserves to steep historic landmarks; the UK is home to a whole host of attractions in need of exploration whatever the season.

Sustrans, the UK's leading sustainable transport charity is a huge advocate of cycling, and offers a numerous selection of cycle tracks throughout the UK.

From the Kennet and Avon canal path to London's best parks - there's something for everyone!

Football

Jumpers for goal posts and a good old fashioned kick about are the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning.

It's important to get kids out in the fresh air and develop their sporting skills, so what better way than playing the game that England loves best?

Football ensures father/son time without mums or sisters getting in the way, as well as providing a level of weekly sporting routine.

Kite flying

The UK supports a number of kite festivals throughout the year, with the biggest, such as Bristol and Portsmouth, showcasing some of the most beautiful and exciting kites from around the world.

Modern kite flying is a far cry from what it used to be, but there's always room for the amateur enthusiast.

Parks and heaths are a great place to start with your son - just remember to get one small enough for his weight to handle!

Legoland

Where better to take your kids than a place where (nearly) everything is made of Lego?

Located in Windsor, the park originally opened in 1996 and is now one of the most visited theme parks in the United Kingdom.

The range of attractions are targeted at children between 2 and twelve but the park is open to everyone. Unlike most theme parks Legoland encourages a sense of interaction and learning throughout.

Annual firework displays are put on for two weeks at the end of each season and are definitely worth a visit.

Swimming

One of the best forms of exercise, swimming is widely available at most local leisure centres - so it needn't cost a fortune!

Teaching your son to swim is obviously important to his safety, and most local facilities provide the opportunity to have lessons where both parents and children can get involved.

One of summer's most exciting activities is to visit a local lido; with many currently being re-opened throughout the UK there is sure to be one near you.

Rocket building

What big kid doesn't want to launch a rocket! One of the most captivating activities for dads and boys alike, rocket building is relatively easy and, surprisingly, educational.

Rockets are available at most local hobby shops and generally require a certain amount of construction. Boys usually love the science behind rocket building, which can potentially enthral those not so dedicated to their school work.

Camping

Bring everything back to basics: a father and son camping trip is a brilliant bonding experience for both.

There is a multitude of camp sites located across the UK, with the New Forest's national park a key destination for its stunning scenery and outdoor activities.

Encouragingly, dogs are welcome at the majority of sites, especially smaller locations such as Matley Wood.( thesun.co.uk )
